Brief Case History

Stephen Powers was convicted of capital murder for the death of Elizabeth Lafferty. Powers was introduced to Lafferty by mutual friends at a social gathering at Lafferty’s home. After their friends departed, Lafferty and Powers were left alone, which is when the crime apparently took place. Elizabeth’s body was found in the hallway of her home, undressed, with several gunshot wounds and abrasions, at 1 a.m. on June 14th, 1998.

Upon his arrest and search of his residence, Powers agreed to take police to the shed in which the gun had been left, and he later wrote a statement admitting to the crime. However, Powers did not confess to the sexual assault, although this aspect of the crime led to the capital murder charge. Powers has appealed his capital murder conviction in an attempt to lessen his sentence, but he remains on death row.
