Brief Case History

On May 5,1996, the body of 78-year-old Minnie Smith was discovered by her son. Smith was found to have been stabbed 30 times and her death was the result of a burglary. After the police interviewed her neighbors, their attention turned to Blayde Grayson. The year prior to Smith’s death, Grayson pled guilty to grand larceny and had his sentenced reduced to three years. During a prison program work detail, Grayson walked off and a warrant was issued his arrest. After the murder, the George County sheriff contacted law enforcement in Florida. The officials were also looking for Grayson for three armed robberies in May 1996. On May 17, the Escambia County sheriff’s department called and stated they had Grayson in custody. They interviewed him and he confessed to the murder. Grayson told the George County sheriff that a man by the name of Jason Kilpatrick was the one who robbed and killed Smith. On May 24, 1997, Grayson took a polygraph test, which he failed, and was convicted of murder and sentenced to death by lethal injection. Two years ago, Grayson sent a letter asking that his execution be carried out immediately.
