John Nixon, Sr. was tried for capital murder, committed with the aid of his son, John Nixon, Jr., on March 24th, 1986. Nixon was found guilty and sentenced to death the same day.
Nixon and his legal team filed a direct appeal, a petition for post-conviction relief, and a writ of habeas corpus. The entire appeal process took years, though eventually all petitions and appeals were denied. Nixon was executed on December 14th, 2005.
