Tells College Pres. He Will Not Try To Enter Southern

HATTIESBURG, Miss., Jan. 5 (UPI)—Negro Clyde Kennard notified Mississippi Southern College Monday that he had given up plans to attempt enrollment at the all white school upon the advice of “many competent people.”

Kennard delivered a note to College President W. D. McCain in person Monday afternoon. The note read—“Upon the honest advice of many competent people I have decided that to insist on my right to enroll at Mississippi College at this point perhaps would not be in the best interest of the general community.”

Less than one month ago the 30 year old former University of Chicago student had vowed to file a court suit if it took that to be admitted to Mississippi Southern. He had also said he would have “no reservations” about asking for help from the NAACP.

Kennard said then he would submit an application for enrollment as an undergraduate for the winter quarter which began Monday.

He had said he wanted to attend Southern because he needed to stay at home to look after his mother and there is no negro college in the area. Kennard lives on a farm near here with his mother.

NEGRO REPORTS GOOD ADVICE ON COLLEGE PLANS

(Reprint From Yesterday’s Final)

Hattiesburg Negro Clyde Kennard today abandoned, at least for the present, his attempts to enroll at Mississippi Southern College.

Kennard delivered to President William D. McCain at 2 o’clock this afternoon the following signed statement:

“Upon the honest advice of many competent people, I have decided that to insist on my right to enroll at Mississippi Southern College at this point, perhaps, would not be in the best interest of the general community.”

Last month Kennard had indicated to Dr. McCain that he would try to enroll at Southern for the Winter Quarter, which began today.

Three years ago Kennard first tried to enroll at Southern, but his application for admission was never completed.
