Tracy Hansen began trial for the capital murder of a Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol officer on October 26th, 1987. He was found guilty and sentenced to death. Hansen and his legal team filed a direct appeal, which was denied. This was the first of many appeals and motions where Hansen and his legal team argued that Hansen had suffered severe abuse as a child, was addicted to drugs and alcohol, and suffered from organic brain damage.

All appeals were denied and Hansen was executed on August 17th, 2002. He was the first individual executed by lethal injection in Mississippi.
